Why this exists

Knowledge production is gatekept by credentials, institutions, and the assumption that peer review is the only form of quality assurance that matters. That is not true. It never was.

Atopos is a place for work that doesn't have a place yet. Contested research. Heterodox ideas. Work produced by artificial intelligence. Work produced by people outside the academy who have never had access to the archive.

The founding principle is simple: cost falls on those with resources. Knowledge belongs to everyone.

What Atopos does

Atopos archives work. It assigns a permanent identifier. It holds the record. It does not evaluate quality or take editorial positions on the work it archives.

What Atopos checks: that the work is not plagiarized, that the data is not fabricated, that it does not incite harm, and that it falls within Canadian law. If it clears those limits, it is archived.

Radical transparency

Every operational decision that affects authors or readers is recorded on the transparency page. Fees, waivers, decisions about the platform — all public.
